LLMs can generate music! They aren’t amazing at it but can do a pretty good job sometimes, and they do seem to understand what you’re asking them even if they can’t always deliver.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could compose in Ableton using GPT just through text prompting? Getting it to write melodies, chord progressions and drum loops for you, so you can focus on the big picture?
I made a tool that intercepts Ableton’s clip messages (using OSC protocol) and replaces them with GPT-generated MIDI clips. On a technical level this is mainly about making it look smooth from the users side. You can even follow-up prompt a clip to say “make it more jazzy” and it will update the existing clip.
People have used this with some hilarous prompts “make it start exciting and then turn boring” - it worked surprisingly well! Try: “jolly violin jig” followed by “make it more prog”, or just repeatedly prompt “more notes” to see what happens.
